BEST Lake District Waterfalls

Ritson’s Force

You’ll find the spectacular Ritson’s Force located in the Mosedale Valley, and it is not one to be missed. Ritson’s Force was named after a former public house landlord, Will Ritson.

This picturesque walk consists of many small waterfalls surrounded by greenery and rocks. You’ll definitely feel at one with nature when adding this walk into your plans. Listen out for different animals during your walk.

Close to this walk, you will find a car park along with a local pub serving lovely food. This is the perfect location for when you’re ready for a drink and a rest before heading back to your accommodation. This is often referred to as Wasdale Waterfall, as you can find it by walking through the Wasdale Valley from the Wasdale Head Inn.

Stock Ghyll Force

You’re sure to have a fantastic walk with the beautiful sights of Stock Ghyll Force. There is a lot of history to uncover when visiting this great spot.

Close to Ambleside, you won’t be far from a range of pubs and restaurants to grab a bite to eat. This 70-foot waterfall is sure to impress and makes a fantastic spot for photos.

Aira Force

This stunning Lake District waterfall will certainly take your breath away. Similar to some other popular waterfalls in the Lake District, Aira Force has been written about by the famous William Wordsworth.

This impressive waterfall is fantastic to see throughout the year on a relaxing walk with family and friends.

Scale Force

Scale Force is an absolutely incredible waterfall to visit. This waterfall is located by Crummock Water – a fantastic place to visit during your trip to the Lakes.

This is the highest waterfall in the Lake District, with falls reaching 170 feet! Everyone will be left in awe after visiting this beautiful spot. Located near Buttermere, you can take a walk around the lovely local village after visiting the waterfall. You’ll also find Moss Force in Buttermere.

Rydal Falls

The Rydal Falls waterfall is situated in the heart of history, as it’s just a short distance away from where William Wordsworth once lived, Rydal Mount. When visiting this area of the Lake District, you can easily add both to your itinerary.

This stunning waterfall is situated within greenery and is the perfect spot to relax while you listen to the gentle movement of the water. Take care when exploring the surrounding woodland.

Colwith Force

Located in Ambleside, Colwith Force is a great place to visit. You’ll find peace and calm during your visit. This waterfall reaches 55 feet, so we’re sure you’ll be impressed.

Here are some of the bodies of water you might see on the way.

  • Taylor Gill Force – arriving from Borrowdale
  • Great Langdale
  • Wasdale

Some of these routes are only recommended for strong hikers, and so they are not suitable for everyone. Ensure that you plan your route carefully to avoid danger.

What to consider when exploring the incredible waterfalls of the Lake District

There are so many gorgeous sights to see around the Lake District, and it truly is a magical place to visit. When exploring, there are some things you must consider.

  • Think about the weather – be careful exploring waterfalls in wet weather.
  • Consider route difficulties – be aware of rocky ledges and moss-covered rocks, particularly in heavy rainfall.
  • Wear the correct clothing and protection (sun cream)
  • Consider taking a torch in case it gets dark
  • Think about car parks – the Lake District can get very busy in the summer months. Many of the stunning waterfalls in the Lake District have their own
  • National Trust car park.
  • Take care if you choose to go wild swimming – follow all guidance.
